i don't think the obama administration has been shy about using things like drones to, you know, take out american enemies and members of al qaeda. and, you know, i would disagree with you a little bit piers on the domestic front being a focus in his second term. usually the way the second terms play out is you only have about 10 to 12 months in the first year to hit the ground really fast and pass your domestic agenda. once that is up, a lot of presidents in their second term start to turn towards foreign policy. and he's got a long list of foreign policy challenges in the second term. iranian nukes, how to deal with china. you know, a big sort of macro agenda in the obama administration has been to reduce our footprint in the middle east, become less entangled in that part of world and pivot towards engaging with east asia. and there's been a lot of work in the first term that has strengthened ties between the u.s. and many east asia countries. and obama officials talk about that as a big project of the second term. >> well, that is the perfect segue to my next guest. christiane ama

it was contested in court and the administration lost that fight. there is a question about how much obama will get behind that. yesterday he talked about climate change and other things. i think the next four years may be tough for energy producers. guest: natural gas has become so plentiful and prices have come down so much that is changing a lot of the economics of the energy industry. that plays right into the question of climate change policy. to the degree that natural gas which is cleaner than coal begins to replace coal as the primary fuel for power plants, that reduces carbon emissions. all of these things are sort of working together. the administration keeps pointing out that oil and gas production is higher than it has ever been and that is true as the economy comes back but there is an inherent tension between some of this energy policy and a job policy. that is one of the reasons why obama takes every opportunity he can to point out the clean energy proposal. the way politically the white house sees an opportunity to thread that needle

neither the bush administration nor the obama administration has wanted to confront the scale of international terrorism and the scale of the fanaticism which is driving it you could argue that obama is worse, but the elites in both parties are trying to find some way to get it down to being a manageable problem. it's a big problem. and frankly, nobody in the u.s. is covering the problems in pakistan, which are very real. pakistan is probably building more nuclear weapons right now than any other countries in the world. we talk about an iranian bomb maybe in the the near future. i think there are whoever a hundred pakistani nuclear weapons and it's a very fragile country with very, very deep problems. afghanistan is decaying, it's not getting better. iraq is decaying, the amount of violence in iraq has gone up dramatically and syria is a mess. and bahrain has a serious problem and yemen is a mess. somalia is a mess. you start looking around and begin to realize there's a much more dangerous world out there than president obama's inaugural address or secretary clinton's testimony today would le
